Thank you John, for this wonderful tribute to your colleague and friend. I so wish he was alive today. He would rip Trump and his crew to shreds. I miss him and I miss real journalism.
Correction: U.S. News, not Knight Ridder, assigned Joe to help cover Operation Desert Storm. I should have caught that because I was the one who sent him. I’ll correct this in the post if I can ever get into my Substack account.
Hey John, thanks for posting this. Joe was inspiring to work with at USN&WR. I have a photo of him standing in the mess line with troops of his beloved 1st Cavalry, somewhere in eastern Saudi Arabia. I had the privilege of being his tentmate there for a short time, just before Desert Storm, and there was no mistaking Joe's low opinion of snakes — in the desert or anywhere else.
I was the resident troublemaker on the U.S. News copy desk in those days and can add that he was a wonderful colleague who was easy to edit and always open to suggestion. At least with me! 😁
John has provided a roadmap to why journalism and journalists matter. Are you paying attention Bezos?

So well deserved. It's a shame it was posthumous though.

Ivan! Nice tribute to Joe.

I can just hear him saying something about them LOL
A wonderful tribute to a great man, John.
I like your Mauldin analogy. It's perfect.
